Day15 – How to upgrade your wordpress blog site to latest version!

by Rich Kid on January 24, 2009

One of the main reasons why I prefer wordpress blog application to other blog application is because of their creativity. They frequently update their application. Knowing that you have to upgrade your site whenever there is new blog update may sounds like a hard task. You will have to download the new update and upload it yourself or use upgrade plugin. You don’t have to go through that stress again with the latest version of wordpress application. It now has inbuilt upgrade system. You can now update your site at the click of a button.

If you just install your blog site using fantastico, depending on your host, you are probably using version 2.6.3 which is older. The latest version is 2.7. So you will have to first upgrade your new site to latest version before you continue customizing your site. To upgrade follow this process.

  1. Download wordpress automatic upgrade plugin. This is software that you will be using to upload files on your new domain. Download a copy here: http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wordpress-automatic-upgrade.1.2.2.zip
  2. Locate the file you just download on your pc and unzip it. If you don’t know how to unzip do this: right click on the file and click extract all. That will work if you use window xp and above.
  3. Next download ftp software with which you will upload the downloaded plugin to your domain. Click here to download filezilla ftp: https://www.ohloh.net/projects/filezilla/download?filename=FileZilla_3.2.0_win32-setup.exe
  4. Double click on filezilla download on your desktop to install it.
  5. After installation process look for the filezilla shortcut from your desk top. Double click on it to launch the software.

filezilla-client

  1. When you double click on filezilla client the what you will see should look exactly like:

filezilla2

  1. Fill in your details as follow: Host – type your domain name (e.g mummypets.com), username and password is same giving to you by your web hosting service provider. Leave the last empty box (port) alone. Click on quick connect.

filezilla3

From the above diagram you can see two sides; A and B. A is where you can access everything on your computer from the software. B is where you can access your new website cpanel.

Now double click on www yellow folder under B section.

filezilla4

Then Click on wp-content.

filezilla5

Click on plugin

When it opens now go to section A click on desktop in the upper column and in the lower column locate ‘wordpress automatic upgrade’. First double click on it. It will open original content of wordpress automatic upgrade plugin. It will be the only file you see in the box beside the empty yellow folder. Now right click on it to upload it.

filezilla6

When the upload complete. Login to your blog site admin. The link must be in your email box already. It looks like – http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin

filezilla7

Use the password and username you choose when installing your website.

Click on plugin

filezilla8

It will open a new page. Here you will see 3 different plugins. Two plugins that comes automatically with your site and wordpress upgrade plugin you upload. Activate plugin 1 and 3. Don’t activate plugin 2 because you don’t need it.

filezilla9

Ok let do it.

Click on activate in front of plugin number 1 (Akismet).

You will notice this immediately after you click on activate

As you can see in above diagram Akismet plugin is now activated. You will also notice two different messages.

  1. Requesting you to enter your wordpress api key to make your newly activated Akismet plugin to work.
  2. Requesting you to upgrade to wordpress 2.7. Presently your wordpress installation is 2.6.3. That is exactly what we want to do with wordpress automatic upgrade plugin we upload. Don’t click on it now.

But for now open a new window and go to www.wordpress.com

Sign up for free account.

You will get a message in your email box. Open it and click on it to confirm your subscription. After that you will get another email with api key in it. Copy the api key, go back to your blog site admin, click on where you see ‘enter api key’, enter it there.

Now click on next plugin ‘wordpress automatic upgrade plugin’ and active it.

filezilla10

You will notice another difference immediately at the top of the page that looks like:

filezilla11

Now click on the first link that says – click here to automatically upgrade……

And follow message you see on next page and other pages till you finish the upgrade.

Upon completion you notice a change in the look of your wordpress admin area. It will now look like:

filezilla12

In next lesson we will continue editing your wordpress site setting.

I could not activate the plugin after uploading it . this is the error message it was giving me.

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.

Warning: require_once(lib/pclzip.lib.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/allacne/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wpau_helper.class.php on line 11

Rich Kid’s Response:

Login to your cpanel through your filezilla ftp. Remove the wordpress automatic upgrade you upload. But before you remove it. First deactivate it. Upload it again. It didn’t upload well.

Aminu Rahaman January 27, 2009 at 4:28 pm
