The reason being that it is faster to learn that way. When somebody is coaching you directly and can correct you immediately you make any mistake, you learn faster. In that case, these resourses become additional Learning or Reference materials to reinforce learning / knowledge acquired through the formal learning process.

Another reason is that in the formal learning process, a time table of one week, two weeks, one year etc. is set and you work towards it to acquire the prescribed knowledge. In this informal system, sometimes, you discover that one procrastinates and in most cases, is unable to accomplish what he set out to do within the prescribed time frame.

I believe that tthis is what you meant when you stated that Do It Yourself (DIY) approach to learning is not for everybody. It requires a lot of discipline, focus and commitment for one to succeed that way.

When however there is no access to the formal Teaching and Learning process, these wonderful resources will undoubtedly fill in the gap, i.e. become automatic replacement, and more…
